Gangtok, September 1: On the occasion of National Sports Day, the celebration organised by Sports and Youth Affairs (SYA) Department at Namchi DAC, Conference Hall on August 24th, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang made several announcements that came as hopeful to many sports enthusiasts in Sikkim.
The CM said that the said announcements will come into force after the approval of the Cabinet.
“Sports Job Reservation will be increased from the existing 2% to 5%. Different kinds of Sports Club to be established in the state the government will also award the 3 sports club. Annual Sports, Inter-House and Inter- School competition will be made compulsory in the educational institutions. Talent hunt to be made mandatory in schools so that budding sports persons can be identified and groomed.
Running 1 mile in school to be undertaken every week. Playground in school to be mandatory and if playground is unobtainable then the school staff need to adopt sports which require less space, if the education institute will require equipments the State Government will provide the same,” the CM announced.
He further added that the coaches would also get a chance to train in their respective fields and if needed, exposure trips for them would be arranged by the government. He said that Rural Sports I and II would be held in all the locations the monetary fund shall be arranged by the State Government which would go via the Zilla Panchayat. Adding that sports players would be encouraged to take part in national level sports events varying from small scale to large scale events.
Regarding the standstill construction of Bhaichung Stadium Chief Minister said that it will be completed at the earliest, claiming that the stadium is filled with state-of-art equipment and will assist the sports players to play and practice in a world-class platform.
The CM underlined the importance of playing various kinds of sports and informed that the youths of Sikkim should adopt playing one sport or the other so that they can be healthy, physically and mentally fit. He warmly remembered the past and present sports person and thanked them in paving the way for developing the field of sports in the state.
He added that the youth to look at these sportspeople as an inspiration as they have represented the state and the country during various sporting competition. He also added that the Sikkim State Government has consistently supported in elevation of sports so that the players especially from the state of Sikkim can shine with their exemplary sporting ability and can bring about laurels.
In cognizance of the pandemic and the unprecedented effects caused to the sporting sector, the CM also spoke of an e-sports angle to sports events and asked sportspersons and coaches to keep continuing with their activities. He also informed that sports in Sikkim will be improved and that the State Government will come up with concrete changes and for the same, he requested the sports players and the coaches to come with suggestions and feedback to enhance sports in the state.
All these announcements came as a warm light for sports enthusiasts in the gloom of probably the worst year this century. The announcements, though not set in stone were welcomed by many sports personalities, in and out of the state.
“I am really happy about this because there is at least something for sportspersons now, in my day even playing national meant nothing, coaches had to live off scraps if you wanted to do something for your own, I remember returning from Kashmir from a football tour and I had played for Sports Authority of India, though I was not a member of the hostel but the coach then had asked me to play for their team, I remember looking at the trophy at my home and I remember my father, who was a house painter, telling me to get a job.
I was heartbroken because all the trophies and certificates wouldn’t account for chump change, now with these announcements, even with the gradual elevation for regard for sports and sportsperson in the country, this is amazing and the kids now should grab this opportunity by the neck,” says Ram Subba, an ex-national footballer.
Komal Thatal, a young footballer, who has made Sikkim proud by his performance in the U-17 world cup as well as Indian Super League, spoke to Sikkim Chronicle and shared what he thought of these announcements.
“Even back in the day when he (CM PS Tamang) was a minister, he used to care for us and helped us in many ways when I was in Sports Hostel, Namchi. Now, to get the job reservations from 2% to 5% is amazing. This is going to pave many opportunities for atheletes and sports persons, I feel this is great,” Thatal expressed.
Even though the revenue generation and fan engagement in sports other than cricket in India, is gradually picking up, it is right to say that India is still behind presumably a decade, to get to international levels in many of these, the first thing that comes as a hiatus might be the “get a job, get set” mindset that has been indoctrinated. Many sportspersons who might have had promising careers ahead of them leave their lines of love, like Subba and indulge in a job and play it safe which comes as an irony.
That said, “I would like to say that whatever one has the heart for they should definitely do that, obviously there will be hurdles and nothing comes easily. There’s been a lot of development in sports now as compared to a few years ago.
As a footballer, talking about top leagues in the country there was the I-league before and now there’s ISL. There’s now a chance for players to be signed in this two leagues, I wanted this, to be in the top leagues and I worked hard for it, I would like to tell anyone who is doing what they love to work hard because nothing comes easy.”
“The government has done a great thing because, now the upcoming generations can also stride for sports with little fear and confusion, as there are new job opportunities with the increase in reservation, even if there are injuries and other factors that the player suffers, he can assist in other places and that I feel is a great step forward,” he adds.
In the same light, the Sikkim Olympic Association also expressed their gratitude to the CM for these announcements and released a press statement.
